Many authors write short stories sporadically over the years, so sometimes these collections are simply put out once the author has written enough to fill a book. ‘The Pain Tree’ is different because you can tell the stories are carefully curated to evoke particular emotions in the reader; personally, I felt wonderment at reading them.
But I’ll tell you it’s full of adventure: scandalous royal plots, romance, epic battles, religious warfare, family grudges, and bad ass women. #Fantasy
Hoffman works as a Private Investigator in Brooklyn, so aside from that being SUPER COOL it means he has seen a lot of what he is writing about — which lends an air of authenticity to this book as well.

It’s beautiful, emotional, dramatic, and imaginative with just a splash of sexuality. And those are just the sprinkles on top.

It’s never a wrong time of year to read stories and see art created by women. | A woman-identified individual embracing, becoming gross and unlikable through her words and her stories makes it so we are not defined by polite rigors of behavior; it makes it so that we are as free as our counterparts; not in a legitimizing way, but in an equitable one.
We may call our pets ridiculous things such as “Fluffy” but in this book they have regal names such as “Datura,” “Southpaw,” and “Aconite”. Clearly, we have been getting this naming thing all wrong as humans.
