Throughout this political season, we have become more aware of the power of our agency and the power we have to speak truth to power. We have become more aware, I feel, of the opportunity to share with others our political opinions.
There have been marches and protests; call-to-actions and pledges for peace; we have even seen calendars for resistance and artists standing up against oppressive governments. All this has happened in this moment. With the aid of the ACLU’s People Power action event, all that has happened will be the inception of a much needed grassroots movement for good, positive change.
The ACLU is the American Civil Liberties Union and they are in charge of insuring that our civil rights and liberties are upheld by the Constitution and the laws of the united states.
“Whether it’s achieving full equality for LGBT people, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age of widespread government surveillance, ending mass incarceration, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach.” About ACLU
The ACLU is taking the initiative to offer resistance training, with the aim of launching the People Power action event, an effort to engage in grassroots movement. On March 11, events near you will hold resistance training led by ACLU in a live stream. By signing up, you will find events near your area where you can participate and find community.
“On March 11, the ACLU is holding a Resistance Training. This event will launch People Power, the ACLU’s new effort to engage grassroots volunteers across the country and take the fight against Donald Trump’s policies not just into the courts, but into the streets. We’re organizing grassroots events in communities across the country to watch the livestream together. Please join us! March 11 at 4:30pm ET/3:30pm CT/2:30pm MT/1:30pm PT” People Power
People Power Is A Community Action Project
Photographer and community member, Thaddeus Miles, shows that one person, with help from their community, can create opportunity for change.
“First, remember that there are plenty of examples of young people who have made a major difference in their community. Second remove the “dream crusher’s” out of your network. Finally, know You can always make a difference if you are focused and intentional” Interview With Thaddeus Miles.
Action Friday, a tumblr blog aimed at normalizing political engagement and activism also shows us that we can all support the causes that we care about by engaging with our community in the best way we can.
People Power joins the ranks of political action by bringing together an element of solidarity among all of the good efforts that people are doing. In addition to People Power, the ACLU’s website is a fantastic resource for information about your personal rights. I encourage you to take a look at their blog and read informational posts that may answer many questions about the laws in our federal government.
